Monarch
Buys More Airbus Planes
Paris (June 16, 1997) -- Monarch Airlines will take
delivery of four more Airbus aircraft beginning in March 1999, following
an order worth an estimated $325 million. The new order, announced today
at the Paris Air Show, consists of two A330-200 wide-body twin aircraft
and two A321 single aisle aircraft.
Monarch's A330's will be powered by Trent 700 engines from Rolls Royce,
while the A321s will have International Aero Engines (IAE) V2533 powerplants.
In a single class layout, the A330s will seat 381 passengers while the A321s
will accommodate 220 passengers.

The British holiday carrier is a long-standing Airbus Industrie customer,
with seven A320s and one A321 as well as four A300s currently in operation.
The recently ordered A321s will join Monarch's European operations while
the A330s will be part of the carrier's long-haul fleet.
Monarch is now further underlining its leading role by becoming Airbus
Industrie's first UK customer to operate both A330 wide-bodies and aircraft
from the A-320 line. The carrier is also the first charter airline to order
the A330-200. The high level of commonality between the A330 and the A320
family will allow the Monarch to benefit from lower training time, costs
for crews through Cross Crew Qualification, allowing Mixed Fleet flying
in the long run.
"We are proud that Monarch will be operating additional Airbus
Industrie aircraft types to complement its fleet," said Jean
Pierson, managing director of Airbus.
To date, Airbus Industrie has received 1196 orders for the A320 family,
of which 216 are for the A321. For the A330/A340 widebody range, 363 orders
were booked, of which 51 are for the A330-200.
