Pratt & Whitney Claims Power On A330 TAM Order

Paris (June 19, 1997) -- TAM airlines of Brazil selected Pratt & Whitney PW4000 engines for five firm and five option Airbus Industrie A330-200 aircraft announced yesterday, in an order valued at approximately $250 million, counting options.

TAM will operate the new long-range, wide-body aircraft on routes it will open between Brazil and the United States and Brazil and Europe. TAM pioneered the introduction of jet aircraft to regional routes in Brazil.

The TAM A330-200s will use the 100-inch fan version of the PW4000 engine, the PW4168, rated at 68,000 pounds of thrust. The PW4168 has won more than half the firm orders for A330s. It was the first engine given 90-minute Extended Range Twin Operations (ETOPS) certification at entry into service in 1994. It quickly achieved the maximum 180-minute certification and has maintained it.

"TAM is the first airline to introduce the A330-200 to Latin America," said Craig Muhlhauser, Pratt & Whitney senior vice president. "We are very proud that another leading airline has chosen our engine for this new aircraft."
