Rolls Collects Orders; Announces Trent 500 Partners

By Ron Wilbur,
Managing Editor

Farnborough, England - Rolls-Royce announced the collection of several orders, with the promise of more to follow. The Trent 500 garnered business worth up to $400 million from International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC) for ten A340-500 and A340-600 on order for delivery starting in 2002.

The order adds another 10 percent to the Trent 500s on order or option for the A340-500/600 and is the first from a leasing company for the engine. The Trent 500 is the sole engine choice for the four-engined A340. Rolls also alluded to more orders to come at the show by talking about the V2500, in which they are a partner, and the AE3007 series. The V2500 is a popular engine for narrowbodies and the AE3007 is the engine series on the Embraer ERJ 135 and 145. An order for up to 140 ERJ 135s is expected to be announced by Embraer this afternoon.

The UK engine company also announced that is taking on six risk and revenue sharing partners for the Trent 500 engine. The partners are taking a 24 percent stake in the program. The partners announced today are FiatAvio, Hamilton Standard, Industria de Turbo Propulsores of Spain, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Lucas Aerospace and Marubeni of Japan. Rolls noted that its ability to attract global aerospace partners within nine months of the industrial launch reflected the companyıs success. Or, perhaps the success of the A340-500 and 600, eh?

Rolls also discussed the aftermarket where they expect to make more announcements later in the week. Like GE today, Rolls is expected to announce a new JV in another area, meeting the companyıs strategy to have a "global reach with a local feel."
