Gulfstream And Lockheed Announce Supersonic Biz Jet JV

Farnborough, England - Gulfstream Aerospace and Lockheed Martin Skunk Works will study the feasibility of a Supersonic Business Jet (SBJ), the companies announced at Farnborough today.

The use of business aircraft is on the rise, with more than 60 percent of Fortune 500 companies operating one or more business aircraft. The globalization of business and the emergence of new markets in far away regions have also increased the need for the aircraft type. The large cabin business aircraft market has grown six percent annually since 1992, says Gulfstream.

Gulfstream and Lockheed say the SBJ in addition to having supersonic cruise capability (1.6-2.0 Mach), it will need a range of more than 4,000 nautical miles, a stand-up cabin with room for eight passengers and three crew, and takeoff noise characteristics compatible with future noise standards. The SBJ must also have an initial cruise altitude capability above other subsonic traffic and be able to fly non-stop to Europe from the central United States.

The joint venture will study the technical and financial feasibility of the program, including marketing, regulatory and certification issues.

The aircraft is not expected to be introduced into service for at least 8-10 years.
