Snecma & Pratt Canada to CollaborateFarnborough, September 4 -- Pratt & Whitney Canada and Snecma of France announced the signing of an agreement between the two companies to collaborate on a new family of turbofan engines in the 12,000 to 16,000 lb. thrust range. The new engine will be designed for 58-90 regional transport jetliners and long range biz jets. The new engine, called the SPW14, is focusing on cost and reliability. These two words seem to be the watchword of Farnborough '96 as airlines and countries continue to mind the waistline, even while drafting orders for new equipment. Whether or not the new, as yet unnamed joint venture between the two manufacturers becomes a kind of CFM Jr. is subject to debate.
